TANKER 31st Annual Charity & Awards Nite celebrated

TANKER Foundation celebrated its 31st Annual Charity and Awards Nite Thursday, January 25, 2024, at Hotel Savera, R.K. Salai, Chennai.

The programme began with The Mr. Venkatesan & Mrs. Malathi Venkatesan TANKER Foundation Memorial Lecture, delivered by Ms. Shanthi Rajmohan, a brave warrior and a person who is on CAPD for a long term (20+ years).

Ms. Shanthi Rajmohan shared her experiences and several heartwarming stories about her life and her uphill struggle with her health. She has been on CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis) for over 20 years.

Dr. Georgi Abraham, Founder Trustee, TANKER Foundation, welcomed the gathering and said the incidence of kidney disease was on the increase and that more awareness had to be created about this terrible disease.

Dr. Georgi Abraham was also grateful to the sponsors for supporting the awards for research in nephrology and dedicated service of doctors. The Awards Nite was a function to recognise research in nephrology and service to the public, he said.

Mrs. Latha Kumaraswami, Managing Trustee, TANKER Foundation, talked about TANKER’s small beginnings in 1993 and that with help from the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (CMCHIS), the PMJAY, the Greater Chennai Corporation, family, friends, Rotary, Lions, Round Table, Freemasons, Ladies Circle, Inner Wheel, Corporates, individuals and other valuable donors, TANKER was able to render its service.

She thanked the valuable staff of TANKER for being Angels on Earth, especially for their commitment and dedication during the Corona pandemic, floods and cyclone. TANKER runs 14 dialysis units in Chennai, Madurai, Vellore, and Tiruppur and does 8,782 dialysis a month, serving 878 patients, she said.
So far, TANKER has done 633,835 free and subsidised dialysis for 2,764 patients and given financial support of Rs. 4.19 crores to 5,021 patients. TANKER has reached out to 2 lakh people with 1,397 awareness programmes and also screened 41,290 individuals for early detection of kidney disease through 516 screening camps.

Chief guest, Dr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Tamil Nadu, said he admired and appreciated the dedicated work that TANKER does and that everyone involved took ownership at TANKER.

He also talked about CKD being a major public health challenge and that it was the need of the hour for more resources to be made available from the public and private sectors for addressing NCDs , awareness and early detection, organ donation and all related challenges.

He presented the following awards.

The K.V. George Kottukulam Memorial TANKER & Kerala Kidney Research Foundation Young Investigator Award for outstanding research done in the field of nephrology in India was awarded to Dr. Pallav Gupta, for his research into ‘Clinico pathologic spectrum and outcomes of infections diagnosed on graft biopsies and nephrectomy in live renal allograft recipients: An institutional experience’. The award carried a prize of Rs. 2 lakhs, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation Love for Service Award for a medical doctor who has gone beyond the call of duty in serving the underprivileged was awarded to Dr. Kamalakannan R, a GP who does selfless service for the needy. The award carried a prize of Rs. 1 lakh, a citation and a gold medallion.

The K. Venkatanarayana TANKER Foundation Awareness Award, given to an individual for creating awareness of any disease, mental, physical and social, was awarded to Mr. Amandeep Singh Kandhari. The award carried a prize of Rs. 1 lakh, a citation and a gold medallion.

The La Renon TANKER Foundation for the Sake of Honour Award, given to an individual who has done exemplary work in his or her field was awarded to Ms. Shanthi Rajmohan, a brave warrior and a person who is on CAPD for a long term (20+ years). The award carried a prize of Rs. 1 lakh, a citation and a gold medallion.

The La Renon TANKER Foundation Lifetime Achievement Awards given to two individuals who have done exemplary work in the field of nephrology were awarded to Dr. Sanjeev Gulati, New Delhi, and Dr. Sharad Madanlal Sheth, Mumbai, who have served tirelessly in the field of kidney disease. The awards carried a prize of Rs. 1 lakh, a citation and a gold medallion each.

The Ashok Sankaralingam TANKER Foundation Patient Endowment – One year dialysis support, was given to four underprivileged patients with kidney failure – Rs. 2 lakhs.

Honouring of Enablers – Master Jitspeed, the young author of the book ‘Legend of Icarus – Flight of Destiny – Unveiling the Mythical Odyssey’, has donated the sale proceeds of his book to help kidney patients.

TANKER Staff Awards were given for Service, Dedication, Commitment, Punctuality and Awareness Initiative to several TANKER staff.

This was followed by dinner, sponsored by Mrs. Nina Reddy at Savera Hotel.

The Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation LOVE FOR SERVICE Award 2024

TANKER Foundation invites nominations for its annual award for the most outstanding Medical Doctor in India who has gone beyond the call of duty in rendering service to the underprivileged. The award will carry a cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000, a citation and a gold medallion. The award winner’s accommodation and travel by train (second class A/C) will be reimbursed.

Criteria:
1. Age – No limit.
2. Medical Doctor.
3. Individual, resident in India.
4. The community service should have been carried out in India by the individual for a minimum of 5 years.
5. The service must be an outstanding contribution towards helping the needy by going beyond the call of duty.

The last date for nominations is December 15, 2023.

K.V. George Kottukulam Memorial TANKER Foundation Young Investigator Award 2024

TANKER Foundation and K.V. George Foundation invite applications for their annual award for the most outstanding young researcher in nephrology in India.The award will carry a cash prize of Rs. 2,00,000, a citation and a gold medallion. The award winner’s accommodation and travel by train (second class A/C) will be reimbursed.

Criteria:
1. Age under 45 years.
2. Primary Researcher must have been a major contributor to the research work.
3. The research must have been done in India.
4. Co-investigators’ consent should be given.
5. The research must not have been presented elsewhere.
6. The research must be an outstanding contribution towards understanding kidney diseases, of relevance to India.

The last date for submission is December 15, 2023.

The programme began with The Mr. Venkatesan & Mrs. Malathi Venkatesan TANKER Foundation Memorial Lecture, delivered by Dr. Gomathy Narasimhan, Senior Consultant – Liver & Renal Transplant Surgeon, Chairman, Medical Advisory Board, Dr. Rela Institute & Medical Centre, Chennai.

The lecture was on ‘Inspire to Aspire’, in which Dr. Gomathy Narasimhan shared her experiences and several heartwarming stories about the people who made a difference in her life – doctors, patients and teachers – who taught her compassion and kindness and empathy.

TN DGP honoured at TANKER Nite 2023

The glittering 30th TANKER Foundation Annual Charity and Awards Nite, celebrated Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at Hotel Savera, R K Salai, Chennai, saw the presence of a couple of IPS officers.

The function saw the participation of Tamil Nadu DGP, Dr. Sylendra Babu, IPS, and former DGP, Dr. Jayanth Murali, IPS, who are valued as enablers by TANKER Foundation.

Tamil Nadu DGP, Dr. Sylendra Babu, was honoured with a citation for participating and completing the 100 kms cycling rally to raise funds for the BP machine project for Tamil Nadu police personnel that is an ongoing project of TANKER Foundation.

TANKER 29th Annual Charity and Awards Nite

Dr. (Smt) Tamilisai Soundararajan, Governor of Telangana and Lt. Governor of Puducherry, the chief guest at the 29th Annual Charity and Awards Nite of TANKER Foundation, said awareness and screening were very important for early detection and for longer lifespan for patients with kidney disease.

In this context, she praised TANKER’s work and said she admired and appreciated the dedicated work that TANKER does. She also highlighted the fact that everyone involved took ownership of TANKER. She touched upon the various government medical schemes for the benefit of the needy.

At the hybrid event that took place Friday, March 25, 2022 at Hotel Savera, Radhakrishnan Salai, Chennai, there were invited guests and live streaming.

The Mr. Venkatesan & Mrs. Malathi Venkatesan TANKER Foundation Memorial Lecture was delivered by Prof. Joanne Bargman, MD FRCPC, Nephrologist, University of Toronto.

She spoke on ‘Grooming 90 Indian Nephrologists’. Prof Bargman shared her experiences and several heartwarming stories about the young Indian doctors in the International Clinical Fellowship Program in Nephrology in the University of Toronto, Canada.

The Awards Nite was a function to recognize research in nephrology and service to the public, he pointed out.

TANKER runs 12 dialysis units in Chennai, Madurai, Vellore, Coimbatore and Tiruppur and does 6,061 dialyses a month, serving 685 patients, she informed.

So far, TANKER has done 4,67,224 free and subsidised dialyses for 2,153 patients and given financial support of Rs. 3.53 lakhs to 3,856 patients. TANKER has reached out to 1.89 lakh people with 1,279 awareness programmes and also screened 35,810 individuals for early detection of kidney disease through 423 screening camps.

Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan presented the following awards:

The K.V. George Kottukulam Memorial TANKER & Kerala Kidney Research Foundation Young Investigator Award for outstanding research done in the field of nephrology in India was awarded to Dr. Medi Naveen Kumar for his research on the ‘Role of Magnetic Resonance Elastography and Biomarkers in Early Chronic Kidney Disease – A hospital-based study’.

The award carries a prize of Rs. 2 lakhs, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation Love for Service Award for a medical doctor who has gone beyond the call of duty in serving the underprivileged was awarded to Dr. Shobha Varthaman, who has selflessly served in humanitarian missions with Doctors without Borders in several conflicts and disaster areas.

The award carries a prize of Rs. 1 lakh, a citation and a gold medallion.

The La Renon TANKER Foundation for the Sake of Honour Award, given to an individual who has done exemplary work in his or her field, was awarded to Prof Joanne Bargman, MD, FRCPC, Nephrologist, Toronto, staff Nephrologist at the University Health Network and Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
The award carries a prize of Rs. 1 lakh, a citation and a gold medallion.

The K. Venkatanarayana TANKER Foundation Awareness Award given to an individual for creating awareness of any disease, mental, physical and social, was awarded to Sister Lucy Kurien from Pune, who has been working tirelessly to spread awareness of the horrific violence and abuse against women through Maher – Mother’s Home which provides a safe haven for battered and destitute women.

The award carries a prize of Rs. 1 lakh, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Ashok Sankaralingam TANKER Foundation Patient Endowment – One year dialysis support, was given for eight underprivileged patients with kidney failure – Rs. 2 lakhs.

The La Renon TANKER Foundation Lifetime Achievement Awards, given to two individuals who have done exemplary work in the field of nephrology, were awarded to Dr. P. Soundararajan and Dr. Anant Kumar.

The awards carry a prize of Rs. 1 lakh, a citation and a gold medallion each.

Dr Anant Kumar donated his cheque back to TANKER Foundation.

Dr Soundararajan received the award from his wife and Governor of Telangana, Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan.

Enablers honoured: Dr. Anisha Ashok and Dr. Jayanth Vijayakumar of Laser & Laproscopic Hospital were honoured for their commitment and selflessness in doing free fistulas for TANKER patients, and patient care.

TANKER Staff Awards were given for Service, Dedication, Commitment and Punctuality to several TANKER staff.

It was a memorable TANKER Annual Charity and Awards Nite 2022, made even more so by TANKER Foundation Advisory Member, Mrs. Sudha Lakshmi Rao.

A trained singer, she delivered the prayer song – a fine pick of Thirukkurals – before the start of the function and had everybody on stage and off it, listening raptly.

The event, a hybrid programme with live streaming, was held Monday, January 25, 2021, at 5.45 pm at Hotel Savera, R.K. Salai, Chennai.

The Mr. Venkatesan & Mrs. Malathi Venkatesan TANKER Foundation Memorial Lecture was delivered by Prof. Nithya S. Krishnan, Consultant Transplant Nephrologist, NHS Trust, UK.

She spoke on ‘My Journey in Nephrology from Chennai to London’. The various challenges she faced included gender and racial bias. It was her grit and determination that helped her reach where she is today as Professor and Head of Transplantation in the NHS Trust in the UK. She emphasised that there is no substitute for hard work. Constant perseverance and endurance, keeping in mind the cause of helping people, is what keeps her going, she said.

Chief Guest, Mr. K. Pandiarajan, Minister for Tamil Official Language and Tamil Culture and Archaeology, said he admired and appreciated the dedicated work TANKER does and observed that everyone involved took ownership of TANKER. He also explained the various government medical schemes available for the benefit of the needy.

The K. V. George Kottukulam Memorial TANKER & Kerala Kidney Research Foundation Young Investigator Award for outstanding research in the field of Nephrology in India was awarded to Dr. Nanditha Arun of Mohan Diabetes Research Foundation, Director and Consultant Diabetologist of Dr. A. Ramachandran’s Diabetes Hospital, for her research into ‘Sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 Inhibitors in patients with type 2 diabetes – A longitudinal observational study. The award carries a prize of ₹ 200,000, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation Love for Service Award for a medical doctor who has gone beyond the call of duty in serving the underprivileged was awarded to Dr. Mishra Vineet Vashistha, Director, Smt. G.R. Doshi & Smt. K.M. Mehta Institute of Kidney Diseases & Research Centre – Dr. H.L. Trivedi Institute of Transplantation Sciences, Gujarat. The award carries a prize of . 100,000, a citation and a gold medallion.

The La Renon TANKER Foundation For the Sake of Honour Award, given to an individual who has done exemplary work in his or her field, was presented to Prof Nithya S Krishnan, Consultant Transplant Nephrologist, NHS Trust, UK. The award carries a prize of ₹ 100,000, a citation and a gold medallion.

The La Renon TANKER Foundation Lifetime Achievement Awards, given to two individuals who have done exemplary work in the field of Nephrology, were presented to Dr. S C Dash (Bhubaneswar) and Dr. Nammalwar (Chennai). The awards carry a  prize of ₹ 100,000, a citation and a gold medallion each.

The K. Venkatanarayana TANKER Foundation Awareness Award, given to an individual for creating awareness of any disease, mental, physical and social, was presented to SCARF Youth Mental Health Program, headed by Dr. Shiva Prakash Srinivasan. The award carries a prize of ₹ 100,000, a citation and a gold medallion.

Mr. Shankar Iyer TANKER Foundation Innovator Award was presented to Dr. Lloyd Vincent, Bengaluru, for his innovation of an Indian-made Haemodialysis Machine which will be available in May 2021. The award carries a prize of ₹ 100,000, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Ashok Sankaralingam TANKER Foundation Patient Endowment – One-year dialysis support, will be given for 4 underprivileged patients with kidney failure, totalling ₹ 100,000.

The Dean of Madras Medical College, Dr. E. Theranirajan, and staff of Heamodialysis Unit at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital were honoured for their selfless service during the pandemic.

The new revamped TANKER website was officially launched.

This was followed by TANKER Staff Service award, ‘Angels on Earth’ and ‘Angels with Wings’ recognition awards, prizes and dinner.

Our 27th Annual Charity Awards Nite was held on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at Hotel Savera, RK Salai, Chennai. For the past 11 years, TANKER has used this special night as a platform to recognise and appreciate the efforts of professionals working tirelessly to improve the lives of people, especially the underprivileged with Chronic Kidney Disease.

TANKER presents research and service awards every year during Republic Day Eve Nite. TANKER Charity Nite recognises and honours doctors for their services to people. On January 25, 2020, the following awards were presented:

‘La Renon TANKER Foundation for the Sake of Honour Award’ was presented to Mrs. Vasundhara Raghavan, the founder of the Kidney Warriors Foundation and a champion who works tirelessly to improve the lives of kidney patients. She was our guest of honour and she spoke on, ‘The Kidney Warriors – A New Outlook to the Kidney Disease Challenge’. She shared her experience in donating her kidney to her son and the journey then on. It was her concern, on the lack of proper information about the disease, diet, transplants and much more that made her start the Kidney Warriors Foundation which is mainly a Facebook and WhatsApp group where thousands of people share their experiences and learn from each other. She also highlighted that there was a great lack of nephrologists in India and that the government should work on this. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1 lakh, a citation and a gold medallion.

The K.V. George Kottukulam Memorial TANKER & Kerala Kidney Research Foundation Young Investigator Award for outstanding research done in the field of Nephrology in India was awarded to Dr. R.M. Anjana of Mohan Diabetes Research Foundation for her research on ‘Unsupervised machine learning model to identify the type 2 diabetes subgroups and their risk of kidney disease’. The award carried a prize of ₹ 2,00,000, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation Love for Service Award for a medical doctor who has gone beyond the call of duty in serving the underprivileged was awarded to Dr. Prahalathan K.K., Co-Founder, Bhumi, for his selfless service in serving the needy and steering a huge volunteer force, especially during the Chennai floods in 2015. The award carried a prize of ₹ 1,00,000, a citation and a gold medallion.

The La Renon TANKER Foundation Lifetime Achievement Awards given to two individuals who have done exemplary work in the field of Nephrology were awarded to Dr. M.A. Muthusethupathi, the father of Nephrology in Tamilnadu, and Dr. Nandita Choudhury, the first Nephrologist in the North East (Guwahati). The awards carried a prize of ₹ 1,00,000, a citation and a gold medallion each.

The K. Venkatanarayana TANKER Foundation Awareness Award, given to an individual for creating awareness of any disease, mental, physical and social, was awarded Dr. C.V. Krishnaswami who has been creating awareness on diabetes through his books, talks and free clinics. The award carried a prize of ₹ 1,00,000, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Ashok Sankaralingam TANKER Foundation Patient Endowment – One-year dialysis support of ₹ 1,00,000 was given to three under privileged deserving kidney failure patients from Coimbatore. Mr. Marteen, Coimbatore Dialysis Unit Manager, received the endowment on behalf of the patients.

TANKER conducted Dialysis Patients Ramp Walk, the brainchild of Dr Georgi Abraham, and crowned both Ms. TANKER and Mr. TANKER as part of their 27th Annual Awards Nite. This special programme was presented by TANKER Trustee, Ms. Revathy. The outfits for the patients were donated by Ms. Samastha and Fab India. Ms. Revathy’s personal makeup artist helped in grooming the 16 participants. Ms. Uma Mageshwari was crowned Ms. TANKER, and Mr Regi, Mr Lal Bahadur and Mr Mahendran were collectively crowned Mr TANKER. All contestants received prizes and special prizes were given to the winners. It was truly a wonderful and moving experience for the audience as well as the participants. The dialysis patients were overjoyed at participating and said it made them feel so special and great and thanked Ms. Revathy who presented the Ramp Walk and TANKER Foundation for having organized the event.

Five of TANKER’s valued staff, who have been with TANKER for over 10 years, were recognised for their dedication and service.

Our 26th Annual Charity Awards Nite was held on Friday, 25th January 2019 at Hotel Savera, RK Salai, Chennai. For the past ten years TANKER has used this special night as a platform to recognise and appreciate the efforts of professionals working tirelessly to improve the lives of people, especially the underprivileged with Chronic Kidney Disease. Mr. Lourd Vijay an International Salsa dancer, a Guinness World Record holder, Cultural Ambassador to South Africa, who has created a Latin dance revolution by bringing Salsa to India and now working on creating a new revolution of saving lives through the ‘Spreading Hope’ Foundation. His lecture was on “Spreading Hope – before & after transplant”. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1 Lakh, a citation and a gold medallion. He was awarded the “La Renon TANKER Foundation for the Sake of Honour Award”.

The La Renon TANKER Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award given to two individuals who have done exemplary work in the field of Nephrology was awarded to Dr. Kumud Pravin Mehta and Dr. Ghulam Hassan Malik, two renowned nephrologists from Mumbai and Kashmir respectively who are pioneers of renal care in India and also served the needy selflessly. The award carried a cash prize of 1 Lakh, a citation and a gold medallion.

The K. Venkatanarayana TANKER Foundation Awareness Award to individuals for creating awareness of any disease, mental, physical and social. Dr. A. V. Srinivasan – M/s. AVS Brain Charitale Trust for his unstinting efforts to create awareness on Parkinson’s disease, Dementia, Stroke, Epilepsy, Headache, Autism and Depression. He gave up his comfortable job at NIMHANS to join The Banyan. Currently he is the Director of The Banyan and BALM, Kovalam. He is truly energetic, his eyes twinkling, a kind demeanour and driven to work among the homeless who are mentally ill with severe mental health conditions especially women.

Our 24th Annual Charity and Awards Nite was held on Wednesday, 25th January 2017 at 5.45 pm at Hotel Savera, RK Salai, Chennai.For the past Eight years we have used this special night as a platform to recognise and appreciate the efforts of professionals working tirelessly to improve the lives of people, especially the underprivileged with kidney disease.

The programme began with The Mrs. Malathi Venkatesan TANKER Foundation Memorial Lecture by Dr.  Shuvo Roy, Professor at the University of California, San Francisco, Co-inventor of implantable artificial kidneyHis talk was on “Kidney Regeneration for the Public. How soon will it become a reality”. 

He spoke about the research that is being done by him and his team about making the implantable kidney very similar to the pace maker using silicon chips and cell membrane from a healthy kidney which would replace the role of the kidneys-remove excess waste material,excess water,maintain blood pressure and carry out all the functions of a normal kidney.With safety tests and efficacy tests which would be carried,he felt that it would become a reality by the end of the decade.

This was be followed at 7.15 pm by the presentation of the following Awards:

  • The K. V. George Kottukulam MemorialTANKER & Kerala Kidney Research Foundation Young Investigator Award for outstanding research done in the field of Nephrology in India was awarded to Dr. Pavan Kumar Rao for his research into Use of Ulinastatin in Renal Failure Patients Developing Sepsis. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 2,00,000/- a citation and a gold medallion.
  • The Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation Love for Service Award for a medical doctor who has gone beyond the call of duty in serving the underprivileged was awarded to Dr. Kousalya Devi, called the “Mother Teresa of South India” by everyone in the southern part of Tamilnadu.  The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.
  • The La Renon TANKER Foundation For the Sake of Honour Award given to an individual who has done exemplary work in his or her field was awarded to Dr.  Shuvo Roy , Professor at the University of California, San Francisco, Co-inventor of the implantable artificial kidney.  The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.

Venkatanarayana TANKER Foundation Awareness Award given to an individual for creating awareness of any disease, mental, physical and social was awarded to Dr.  Vijayaraghavan, who has created awareness and promoted the change of lifestyle and diet for reversing diabetes through his Intensive Dietary Approach Program (IDAP). The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.
  • The Ashok Sankaralingam TANKER Foundation Patient Endowment  One year dialysis support was given for 3 under privileged deserving patient with kidney failure ₹ 1,00,000/-.

Our Chief Guest Dr. Soumya Swaminathan Secretary, Department of Health Research – Ministry of Health and Family WelfareGovernment of India, and Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research presented the awards.She spoke on the occasion and said that reseach was very important to find solutions for various health issues and said that the ICMR was collaborating with the various IITs for this.She also encouraged start ups to invest into making the artificial kidney a reality. Mrs.Latha Kumaraswami gave an update of TANKER’s activities.TANKER had provided almost 2 lakh dialysis and given over ₹ 1.75 crores as financial support for the needy. TANKER was very thankful to the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme which has given access to free long term dialysis to thousands of underprivileged patients.Dr.Georgi welcomed the gathering and emphasised that research was of great importance to find long term solutions for kidney disease.

There was a brilliant dance performance by students of “Avvai Kapagam” teaching differently abled children lead a life of dignity and independence followed by games, prizes and dinner. We thank all our well wishers, sponsors and donors especially Mrs. Nina Reddy for sponsoring the dinner at Savera Hotel.

He is a great philanthropist and has done outst anding work in Diabetes and Hypertension which are the major causes of kidney failure in our country. His lecture was on “Pioneering Contributions to Nephrology”. The award carried a cash prize, a citation and a gold medallion.

George Memorial TANKER & Kerala Kidney Research Foundation Young Investigator Award for outstanding research done in the field of Nephrology in India was awarded to Dr. Sreejith Parameswaran for his research into “Chronic Kidney Disease in rural population “.The award carried a cash prize, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation Love for Service Award for a medical doctor who has gone beyond the call of duty in serving the underprivileged was awarded to Dr. Sunder Subramaniam, who through his Freedom Trust has carried out outstanding and lasting contributions to empower people with disability. She is the Founder and Chairperson of the Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation (DHAF), a non-profit organization, which has provided support and relief to thousands of women and children in Somalia. Her lecture was on “Keeping Hope Alive”. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Muthoot M. George Memorial TANKER & Kerala Kidney Research Foundation Young Investigator Award for outstanding research done in the field of Nephrology in India was awarded to Dr. Ashok Kumar Yadav for his research into “Immune dysfunction, inflammation and atherosclerosis in patients with chronic kidney disease “. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 2,00,000/- a citation and a gold medallion.

The Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation Love for Service Award for a medical doctor who has gone beyond the call of duty in serving the underprivileged was awarded to Dr. Sai Lakshmi M.B.B.S. D.Ch D.N.B, a pediatrician who has given up mainstream practice to start EKAM Foundation, which helps underprivileged sick children with their medical treatment costs. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.

The K.Venkatanarayana TANKER Foundation Awareness Award to two individuals for creating awareness of any disease, mental, physical and social. Dr. Janak K.Nathan M.D. Neurology – Chief Coordinator for India and Asia for the ‘Purple Day’ epilepsy awareness programme in association with Anita Kaufmann Foundation, USA and Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia, Canada. He and his team from Mumbai have been conducting epilepsy camps and training village workers to identify and refer them to the camps. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Muthoot M. George Memorial TANKER & Kerala Kidney Research Foundation Young Investigator Awardfor outstanding research done in the field of Nephrology in India was awarded to Ms. Shruti D. Dave, M.Sc,Ahmedabad for her research into “Transplantation Tolerance”.The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 2,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation Love for Service Award for a medical doctor who has gone beyond the call of duty in serving the underprivileged was awarded to Dr. H.L. Trivedi, F.R.C.P.(C), D.Sc., Prof. & Director, Institute of Kidney Diseases & Research Centre (IKDRC) Institute of Transplantation Sciences (ITS), Ahmedabad. One of the most distinguished achievements of his life is his breath-taking invention of developing insulin-making stem cells in the lab with which he has treated diabetics. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.

CAIIB – “Creating awareness of a debilitating illness through the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India”. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 50,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion. The Ashok Sankaralingam TANKER Foundation Patient Endowment – One year dialysis support given for an under privileged deserving patient with kidney failure. The awardees were Mr. Rajendiran-Kilpauk Unit, Mrs. Jennifer- Ambattur Unit and Mrs.Muthayee- Madurai Unit.

Book release-Dr. Georgi Abraham authored a book “The Essential Questions and Answers in Nephrology”The book was released by our chief guest Mr. Mr. David Holly during the occasion.

SPASTN (Spastic Society of Tamilnadu) empowers and enables disabled people. The students of SPASTIN presented an outstanding dance performance to commemorate our Republic Day on the following day.

We had a special invitee for REN 2013, Dr. V. Ramdoss from Seychelles. Dr. Ramdoss is an astute medical practitioner. He completed his degree in medicine rom Thanjavur Medical College and post graduate diploma in Orthopedics at Madras Medical College. He was always caring, compassionate and empathetic throughout his life. After listening to the activities of the TANKER, during the presentation a spontaneous announcement came from Dr. Ramdoss, i.e his desire to donate ₹ 10. 0 Lakhs for TANKER. All Trustees and Members of TANKER gratefully acknowledge his donation and all are very much thankful for his humane gesture.

The La Renon TANKER Foundation For the Sake of Honour Award given to an individual who has done exemplary work in his or her field was awarded to Dr. Binayak Sen who is a renowned public health doctor who has helped tribals in Chhattisgarh. He is also a human rights activist. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Muthoot M. George Memorial TANKER & Kerala Kidney Research Foundation Young Investigator Award for outstanding research done in the field of Nephrology in India was awarded to Dr. P. V. Lakshmi, M.Sc, Ph.D, for her research into “Treatment of Chronic Kidney Disease Patients with a Supplemented Low Protein Diet and Supplemented very Low Protein Diet”. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 2,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation Love for Service Award for a medical doctor who has gone beyond the call of duty in serving the underprivileged was awarded to Dr. V. S. Natarajan, M.D., M.R.C.P. (U.K)., FRCP(Edin), D.Sc.(Hon), Chennai. He is the father of Geriatric Medicine who has given a lease of life to the aged and needy. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.

The K.Venkatanarayana TANKER Foundation Awareness Award – a new award that has been instituted by the BALAHA Group of Companies for creating awareness of any disease, mental, physical and social– Mrs. Rajalakshmi (of TANKER) -“Awareness and Prevention programmes on Kidney Disease” – Till December 2011, she has done 200 awareness programmes reaching out to 41,327 people. Of this, 127 programmes were done in Educational Institutions attended by 31,385 students and 73 programmes were done for adults where 9,942 have attended. Further she has conducted 23 screening camps and screened 2,701 individuals for early detection of kidney disease and Mrs. Vidya Reddy (of TULIR) – “Awareness and Prevention programmes on Child Sexual Abuse”. Ms Vidya Reddy is a social worker who co founded TULIR.Tulir’s vision is the right of every child to be safe all the time from sexual abuse. The five broad areas of activity are Personal Safety Education – a direct prevention initiative with children and which includes Online Safety, Healing and Intervention, Resource Development, Advocacy, Training, Research and Networking. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.

The La Renon TANKER Foundation For the Sake of Honour Award was given to Dr. Brian Pereira who is a world renowned Nephrologist from Boston for his exemplary work in the field of Nephrology.The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.

The Krishnan Ang TANKER Foundation Endowment Lecture was delivered by Dr. Brian Pereira, . His lecture was on “Solving the challenges of kidney disease – the journey of one Indian Nephrologist”.

George Memorial TANKER & Kerala Kidney Research Foundation Young Investigator Award for outstanding research done in the field of Nephrology in India was awarded to Dr Narayan Prasad from Lucknow for his dedicated research to help children affected with kidney disease. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/- a citation and a gold medallion.

The Renny Abraham TANKER Foundation Love for Service Award for a medical doctor who has gone beyond the call of duty in serving the underprivileged was awarded to Dr Anita Rao,T.T.Ranganathan Clinic,Chennai for going beyond the call of duty and personally helping thousands of patients fight addictions. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/-, a citation and a gold medallion.

The La Renon TANKER Foundation For the Sake of Honour Award was awarded to Dr. Ananth for his in-depth research work into problems of Hypertension that arise in pregnant women. The award carried a cash prize of ₹ 1,00,000/- a citation and a gold medallion.

The Krishnan- Ang TANKER Foundation Endowment Lecture was delivered by Dr. Syed Adibul Hasan Rizvi Prof. and Director, Sind Institute of Urology and Transplantation (S.I.U.T Karachi). A Magsaysay Award winner ,Dr.Rizvi delivered the lecture on “Challenges in Establishing Renal Care in a Developing Country”. He runs a completely free world renowned centre in Karachi where anyone can walk in and get treatment for kidney disease.
